Here’s your opportunity to learn more about bikepacking in our National Monument. Enjoy a scenic trip to Leasburg Dam State Park and enjoy a star party and some live music. We’ll make sure everyone is prepped and ready at our introductory meeting 10 days before the campout. You’ll be able to ask all your questions, check your bike, and meet the trip leaders. Then on Sept 21 we’ll load up and ride at a relaxing pace to Leasburg Dam State Park where we’ll camp for the night. The ride is 20 miles one way and almost entirely on dirt roads. Starting from Plaza de Las Cruces the route follows unpaved ditches and the Rio Grande levee trail north through the valley. The Doña Ana and Robledo Mountains provide a dramatic contrast to the lush green orchards. The route is suitable for all but the skinniest tires road bikes. Once we arrive at Leasburg we’ll be treated to music from ‘Jackal’ (6:30-8:30pm) followed by stargazing with the Astronomical Society of Las Cruces. After a night in the lovely Group Campsite, riders will have the option to return to Las Cruces along the Rio Grande or ride a more adventurous section of the Monumental Loop.
