‘A Promise of Roses’

The play ‘A Promise of Roses’ will show at the Isabel Crouch Reader’s Theatre at New Mexico State University. Timmy Shaw has won a Tony for his last play. Feeling pressure to follow up on his success, he returns to his childhood home for inspiration. Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 and Sept. 14, Saturday, Sept. 8 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 and Sept. 16. Admission is $5; free for students. Info: 575-644-1536

Roller derby

Crossroads City Derby presents Jocks vs. Nerds III on Saturday, Sept. 8. Gates open at 7 p.m.; game starts at 8 p.m. at the rink behind Meerscheidt Recreation Center, 1600 E. Hadley Ave. The event will include food vendors, half-time fun for kids and a 50/50 charity raffle to benefit the Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico. There will also be a drawing for the winner of the Omaha Travel Fund Raffle. Tickets are $7 in advance from any CCD member or at Nessa’s Café, 901 W. Movie in the Park

“Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” will show at Young Park, 1905 E. Nevada Ave. on Saturday, Sept. 8 as part of the City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department’s Movies in the Park Program. Monuments to Main Street Fiesta

Throughout September, Monuments to Main Street will showcase fun events and tours throughout Doña Ana County. The Monuments to Main Street Kick-Off Fiesta takes place from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at Klein Park, 155 N. Mesquite St. The event will feature live music by Phat Soul, Folklorico dancing, stagecoach rides, an arts and farmers market, Chocolate on the Camino Real Trail and the “What’s Your Las Cruces?” oral history project. Organ Mountains and Picacho Peak art show

Cutter Gallery, 2640 El Paseo Road, will open the Las Cruces Fall Art Scene with a special showing of paintings of the Organ Mountains and Picacho Peak, part of the Second Saturday Arts Hop from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8.  Five other galleries will be participating, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with 12 hours of continuous art exhibits and events in the Las Cruces area: New Mexico State University Art Gallery, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Rokoko Gallery, 4 -7 p.m.; Art Obscura 7-10 p.m.; Doña Ana Arts and Cultural Center, 4-7 p.m.; and Four Points Perspective 7-10 p.m. Info:daarts.org
